Aston Martin Racing team and engine manufacturer Honda announced an official technical partnership in Formula 1 from 2026

A press conference was held in Tokyo today at which the Aston Martin Racing team and engine manufacturer Honda announced an official technical partnership in Formula 1 from 2026, when the new technical regulations will come into force. Thus, Aston Martin will become a full-fledged factory team, ceasing to buy power plants and other elements of racing cars from Mercedes. The full name of the team will now be Aston Martin Aramco Honda.
The appearance of a team using Honda engines means that from 2026 there will be six motorists in Formula 1: Mercedes, Ferrari, Renault, Ford, Audi, Honda.

Last fall, Honda applied to Formula 1 as a future motorist, saying at the same time that such an intention does not mean that they will actually come to Formula 1 in 2026.

It was assumed that they would be able to continue their cooperation with Red Bull, but Helmut Marko hinted back then that they were expecting a new partnership with motorists and they no longer considered the Japanese manufacturer as an engine supplier. An agreement with Ford was later announced.

After that, various assumptions appeared about how Honda was going to return to Formula 1. One of the options was the possible purchase of a racing team, and in this regard AlphaTauri was quite suitable, rumors about the sale of which appeared after the death of Dietrich Mateschitz. The new head of the Red Bull sports direction, Oliver Mintslaff, said at the time that there were a lot of two teams for one Red Bull, but so far talks about selling the junior team have been suspended.

At the same time, at the end of last year, it was reported that billionaire Lawrence Stroll was looking for a manufacturer of power plants for his team. One of the tasks that Stroll set when creating the team was to become a factory team. It is clear that starting to develop your own power plants for this is not only an extremely expensive process, but also a long one. Thus, it would be ideal to get your own manufacturer and stop being a client team.

What does the partnership with Honda mean for Aston Martin?

In addition to obtaining the status of a factory team, these are also serious additional difficulties, troubles and problems.

Together with the power plants, Aston Martin received a rear suspension and gearbox from Mercedes. Now the team will have to develop and build all this independently. In addition to the fact that these are engineering solutions, it is also a need to fit into budget constraints and create the appropriate infrastructure.

Last December, we talked in detail about the new Aston Martin base, which should be ready by mid-2024, when the wind tunnel will be put into operation, but now the gradual relocation of employees to new offices and premises has already begun.

The emergence of such a developed infrastructure was conceived by Stroll Sr. as one of the most important steps in gaining independence for the team. If the project continues to develop, a motor division may well be built on the same territory for the development of its own power plants. But this is a matter of the distant future.

Interestingly, at the same time, cooperation with Honda concerns only the production of engines exclusively for Formula 1 — as for the civil automotive industry, cooperation with Mercedes continues here. However, some time ago Aston Martin sold 17% of its shares to the manufacturer Geely, which has now become the third largest co-owner of the brand after Lawrence Stroll and the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia.

too much, we can expect reports of other transitions to Aston Martin engineers from top teams. Mattia Binotto as a great engineer, but a lousy team leader, still out of work.

What does the partnership with Aston Martin mean for Honda?

Despite the rather thorny path in Formula 1, Honda remains one of the most ambitious brands in Royal Racing, as it regularly declares.

A partnership with Aston Martin could mean for the Japanese another potential path to the titles they are so eager to win. It can be assumed that the success of the team at the beginning of the 2023 season finally prompted them to cooperate with Aston Martin.

For Honda, which has already built hybrid powerplants for Red Bull, it will be quite easy to adapt them to the new rules. It was the new regulation, which provides for an increase in the share of electric motor power in the total power of motors up to 50%, that also became an incentive for the Japanese manufacturer to return to Formula 1. They carry out the same policy of switching to electric motors for civilian cars.

Toshihiro Mibe, Executive Director of Honda: "One of the key reasons to make the decision to return to Formula 1 is the desire of the series to be more environmentally friendly, which corresponds to Honda's philosophy of reducing carbon dioxide emissions and developing hybrid technologies."

In general, the details of the future partnership have not been disclosed, but Honda has already stated that it does not intend to interfere in the management of the team.

Composition of pilots

Another curious question that arises when trying to imagine the future of the Aston Martin Aramco Honda team is the composition of the pilots.

At the moment, the obvious engine of the team is Fernando Alonso, but we remember how they parted with Honda after McLaren and how Alonso called Honda engines: "GP2 engines". Honda were so offended that they blacklisted Alonso, and later blocked him from competing in the Indy 500 in a car with a Honda engine.

Now they assure that "Fernando Alonso is a well-known and respected racer, and if Aston Martin decides that Alonso will be our driver again, we will have no objections to his performance."

President of Honda Racing Corporation Koji Watanabe said: "We believe that the choice of riders depends entirely on the decisions of the team members, and not on the actions of a partner or a supplier of engines like us. We will leave the issue of choosing pilots to the team."
However, the same Watanabe said in another interview that Honda would be happy to see Yuki Tsunoda as a part of the pilots: "It's too early to talk about the composition of the team in 2026, but we want Yuki to be among the candidates. He is a participant in our program, everything is going well for him in Formula 1."

In response, Aston Martin Performance Technologies CEO Martin Whitmarsh said that Tsunoda is doing enough this season to be the focus of his team's attention.

However, it is quite possible that by 2026 Fernando Alonso himself will decide to end his career, because in two months he will be 42 years old.

Whitmarsh: "I am sure that the composition of our riders will change before 2026. Ultimately, Honda and Aston Martin want two of the best drivers we can have in the cars. We are here to win, just like Honda, so in 2026 we have to start winning together."

Honda also supports another Japanese pilot — one of the current contenders for the title in Formula 2, Ayumu Iwasa, who now occupies the third place in the individual standings in his second season in the championship.

The situation is slightly complicated by the fact that Lance Stroll is unlikely to leave the team on his own, and if this happens, the presence of Stroll Sr. will also be in question.
